"The Hurricane"

love of my life (ms. K) took me to see "The Hurricane"
last night. i thought it was about sailing because she
knows how much i love sailing. <he's lying>

i tend to assess a movie by the way i feel when i walk
out of the theater. i really appreciate it when the
writers, director, editors and producers let you walk
out feeling better about yourself and feeling inspired
to be a better, healthier person who can be an asset
to yer own growth and thereby to the growth of society.

we all know the story of "The Hurricane" and the movie
could easily have taken the tack to inspire us to
bitterness and anger about social injustice (just as
the 10 O'clock News, Dateline and 60 Minutes do every day). but it didn't.

instead, they presented the story in a way that let
the viewer share rubin carter's transcendence of
unfortunate circumstance. they showed his original
bitterness, his discipline in honoring his principles,
and finally his capitulation to trusting and
surrendering to someone, something, outside his own
ego. this is probably the most honest presentation of
a biographical story i've ever seen. when he called
the white canadians who had befriended him and said
after 20 plus years in prison, "i can't do the time" i
couldn't hold back the tears.

at the end of the movie ms. k leaned to me and said,
"this has oscar written all over it"

i couldn't help but think how insignificant "oscar" is.

go see it. kath is right.

and NO, i won't be writing to rubin soon. but i did send the book to my son who is doing time in leavenworth.

BTW,
this is my first post on any SI "broad" (yeah, it's spelled rong - but the story of why will cost you two cents). why did i come to voltair's porch? same reason the rest of you came here. at least i can say, it's the first thread on SI that moved me enough to pay money to type a message on it. and it's not the thread, it's the people. i figure i'll get it back if each of you will send me two cents every time i post something. <he's kidding>

i'll speak of the "Q" later <he doesn't really know anything other than what he's read from the wonderful people here on the porch and the other SI Q threads>. i wanted to get in while we're still under 1,000 (posts) i think we'll see a 20 bagger (of posts) from here. <G> but for now, let me give thanks to fellow porch sitters and the exalted voltair for everything you've posted. <yes, he's including the tenderest of tubesteaks remark>

and in advance apologetic warning, though i sometimes sound as if i speak with sharpened tongue, i mean no offense to any man, woman or child - though i don't like cats <but he has one and treats it gently because it is getting old and has seen the error of it's ways>

<opens his sopping wet gym bag and pulls out cold modelo especial cervezas and limons for all>

a toast! i am home safe. thanks friends.

love,

-elpolvo

uuuuhhh... you guys don't spell check people's posts here do you? <crosses his fangers and hopes fer a NO>
