Sun Microsystems has installed 3000 JavaStations sun.com at its corporate headquarters in an initiative it has called Project 3000. As a part of this program, Sun has invited three vendors to participate in its Java-based office suite evaluation.

The three vendors are:

Corel Office for Java officeforjava.corel.com
Lotus/Kona Technologies kona.lotus.com
Oracle Hat Trick

Whoever wins this contest will gain a significant endorsement in the corporate marketplace. Sun should reach a decision within the next couple of weeks.

It is also interesting to note that Anyware Office by Applix applix.com was not invited by Sun to compete in Project 3000.

In my opinion Corel has a good chance of coming out the winner because:

1. Corel Office for Java is already certified 100% pure Java javasoft.com
corel.com

2. Corel's product will be ready before Lotus.

3. It was Sun that encouraged Corel into developing a Java office suite.
