Here's a reference to aan extended treatment of these points. This deals with the historicity of Jesus (which I hardly doubt) but get's to much involved (IMO) of events so remote from Jesus era that they can hardly be relevant. There is a decent discussion of historiography, and some of the documents (like Josephus). It's a start any way. I think it is a poor approach to try to establish a position by criticizing a book like McDowell which seems to me to be loaded with mistakes.
