Company Press Release SOURCE: Inprise Corporation Wireless Maingate Selects Inprise Application Server Inprise Provides Strategic Development Solution for Mobile Communications STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Inprise Corporation (Nasdaq: INPR - news) today announced that Wireless Maingate selected the Inprise Application Server as the backbone of their innovative wireless machine to machine (M2M) communication project. Wireless Maingate, who is backed by Telia, is an operator that provides an infrastructure for companies to automatically collect information from remote devices using the Global System for Mobile Communication standard (GSM) and Internet technology. The application was co-developed with Inprise Enterprise Business Partner, Agenda.
(Photo: newscom.com ) The GSM model of M2M communication lends itself to a number of automated data collection and billing tasks. Wireless Maingate has been working with customers and partners to apply the technology to a wide range of technical wireless applications, including collecting data from electrical utility meters, parking meters and cash machines or detecting low ink-levels in printers. The technology can also be embedded in automobiles to act as a global positioning system that can send and receive messages to report thefts, vehicle problems or accidents.
Inprise provides a complete technology solution for Wireless Maingate to create the software infrastructure for all its GSM communications. To ensure Maingate's technology is scalable, manageable and reliable, the company is using the Inprise Application Server and the VisiBroker CORBA Object Request Broker (ORB). For optimum reuse and the ability to embed technology into GSM devices, Wireless Maingate built its applications using the latest Java technology with Inprise's JBuilder development tool. To efficiently manage distributed applications over GSM links and the Internet, Maingate selected Inprise's AppCenter.
''We needed a solution that would enable us to provide our customers with as close to 100 percent application uptime as technically possible,'' said Magnus Lundin, technical manager at Wireless Maingate. ''Using the Inprise Application Server and AppCenter allows us to deploy new wireless M2M applications that our customers can rely on.''
Wireless Maingate and Agenda AB, an Inprise Enterprise Business Partner, have developed technology that is already being utilized in the Swedish electricity market to collect information automatically from customers' meters. With the recent deregulation in the Swedish power market, Wireless Maingate enables Scandinavian utility companies to reduce costs, provide more accurate bills, and improve customer service, thus allowing them to remain competitive. Customer information is collected centrally and made available to individual power companies over the Web.
''We chose Inprise's technology after an in-depth evaluation of BEA's WebLogic and the Oracle Application Server. Inprise's technology provides us with a robust solution for all our application development and deployment requirements,'' added Lundin. ''The Inprise Application Server, JBuilder and AppCenter offer an end-to-end solution that has enabled us to build an innovative application with unsurpassed application management and security.''
The company has also worked with customers outside Scandinavia, including Teclion SA, a pan-European lift-servicing company based in Belgium. GSM units installed in lifts communicate with the Wireless Maingate server using Short Message Service (SMS) to handle emergency situations and warn of potential problems, which dramatically reduces maintenance costs.
''We view the Wireless Maingate project as a very important application of our technology,'' said Gidi Schmidt, vice president of Europe, for Inprise. ''The Wireless Maingate project further demonstrates Inprise's ability to provide customers with an end-to-end solution for application development, deployment and management. The Inprise Application Server provides Wireless Maingate with the backbone infrastructure for data applications in the GSM market, and Inprise AppCenter enables centralized management of distributed Internet applications.''
Wireless Maingate is also working with vending machine manufacturers to develop a system that would allow customers to purchase drinks and snacks with a credit card that is debited over a wireless link. Once in place, the link also provides sales and stock information back to the vending machine supplier, which reduces the number of unnecessary service visits to vending machines that are still full.
