One more retirement story -- It's never too late!!

Since the market is closed, weekend OT subjects are still fair game.
I "retired" from my 30 year federal career in 1985 with virtually no savings. Not as dire as it sounds since I had no mortgage or other debt, and owned a couple of rent producing properties. Had been in and out of the stock market since age 20, but when a small amount accumulated, it was used to buy a house, car, rental property, pay for kids college education, or help relatives.
The federal annuity provides for a comfortable but not lavish retirement.
I consulted for another ten years and had about 100K in my SEP-IRA in 1995 that was mostly in mutual funds (Yuck). In 1995 I converted half the IRA to self-directed, and began random investing in individual stocks with no particular discipline.
Early in 1999 I discovered gg, pruned 24 stocks to 8, opened an on line accounts and had >700% year.
My only regret is that I did not pay the taxes and convert more to a Roth. I rolled a bunch of my losers to an on-line Roth, sold them bought GMST -- up 100%
Best part of the whole deal is that a couple of grandsons now have college assured.
Thanks to all on a great thread

Regards;

Midwest
