You cannot use margin in a SEP/IRA...

I think these people who "corrected" you are very confused. I suspect the confusion may be explained by industry practices. When I switched my Fidelity SEP from the mutual fund to a brokerage account, I was sent forms to fill out to get clearance for options and margin trading. A Fidelity rep told me that those forms are mistakenly sent out to anybody opening a brokerage account.

If you have a SEP/IRA, do this: Try to make a trade on margin. You should get an error message.
