I had exactly the opposite experience with tomatoes last year. It was my first attempt at Brandywines, and they were exceptionally tasty, much better than the hybrids, Better Boy, Early Girl and Big Boy. We had a lengthy drought, and it was very hot, and the hybrids didn't fare as well. Our most prolific producer was anonymous, unfortunately, a healthy plant I bought at the nursery because the main stem was as thick as my thumb. It produced tomato after tomato all season long, very healthy plant, while the named hybrids languished.
