Excellent observation - Hitachi is doing its own 32-way Chip Set. That should add to the Intellectual Property tied to the IA64 architecture - and it indicates Hitachi's commitment to this architecture.

My guess is that HP is busy doing the same thing as Hitachi - working on their own 32 or 64-way SMP chip sets for IA64. All their bombast about NOT using ITanium seems to have EAVAPORATED now that HP has got hold of real ITanium CPUs and systems.
