That "bombast" was nothing more than the press inflating anti-Merced FUD to the extreme. HP merely said that their N-class of servers won't be going to Merced. This was because Merced didn't fit into the regular 2-year upgrade cycle for those N-servers. Adding a little mini-upgrade stage just to accomodate Merced would be way too difficult considering the N-server support structure.

They never said that they'll completely forego Merced, but that's what the press insinuated. HP commented that Merced will be supported in other lines of servers, but that comment was relegated to a mere footnote near the bottom of the articles. Also, the comments about Merced's "ho-hum performance" was also overblown by the press, even though they were actually referring to PA-RISC emulation.

At least that negative press did have one nice effect. It made the competition feel a bit more complacent. Even some AMDroids think that Merced won't be able to compete against a copper Athlon, even with Merced running native IA-64 apps. Boy will they be in for a surprise!
