PB, I checked out GE Capital's earnings report which is within GE's 1998 annual report. It does differentiate between ordinary income and investment income, with separate line items for the following:
Time sales, loans and other income: 14,682
Operating lease rentals: 5,402
Financing leases: 4,267
Investment income: 5,617
Premium & commission income of insurance businesses: 11,352

Since their investment income accounted for about 40% of the parents profit, I was glad to see that GE Capital broke it out as a line item.

I wish Intel would do the same and not use a footnote to divulge the capital gains.

Maybe at some time in the future, Intel will sell shares in its investment portfolio, and distribute some of these shares to employees for bonus payments.
