What I can't quite understand is how some of these high profile art museums like Boston's Gardner (sp?) get burglarized
as often as they do. Is it because many are not equipped with adequate security systems? The losses are often permanent
and of tragic and historic significance to society.

This is a good question and one I can only guess at. I believe part of their problem is they cannot move art into a vault each night. The vault is not the cure all in that any man made equipment can be opened given enough time. Time is the catch. Almost no time is required to lift a picture off the wall. The systems used in museums are typically motion detectors and seismic detectors. I am not sure if the security arrives after the art is removed or they are unaware until morning. Do you happen to know?
