OEMS and Cable Operators Can Now License Java Technology Directly From
PowerTV; Application Developers Gain a 'Write Once, Run Anywhere(TM)'
Development Environment

CUPERTINO, Calif., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- PowerTV, Inc., a leading
developer of software solutions for digital interactive cable TV, today
announced it has integrated Sun Microsystems' PersonalJava(TM) technology with
its leading set-top box system software, and now has the ability to license
this technology directly to OEMs and cable operators. This licensing agreement
gives cable operators a direct link to Java technology and an array of
sophisticated Java-enabled interactive applications in the digital cable
environment. The addition of Java TV(TM) application program interfaces
(APIs) to PowerTV's system software also helps speed the delivery of
interactive applications to digital cable television; once an application is
written in PersonalJava language, it will run on any platform that uses Java
technology. This enables cable operators to offer subscribers the same
applications they know and love in PC and Internet environments on their
digital cable systems.
"It's a win-win merge of technologies for cable operators, OEMs,
interactive application developers, and end-users alike," said Bill
Aspromonte, vice president of engineering and co-founder of PowerTV. "By
offering PersonalJava as an integrated component of its operating system,
PowerTV is providing cable operators and OEMs a direct link to a multitude of
exciting interactive applications, including video-on-demand, e-commerce, and
customized advertising -- all of which provide cable operators additional
service offerings and multiple revenue streams."
"Integrating Sun's Java technology with PowerTV's set-top box software
gives OEMs and cable operators a flexible and scalable platform to build
compelling, next-generation, interactive TV service offerings for the cable
industry," said Curtis Sasaki, director, Consumer and Embedded, Sun
Microsystems. "Application developers can also bring existing services into
the cable TV environment simply and cost-effectively by leveraging the Java
platform."
The addition of Java technology to PowerTV's system software gives
application developers a flexible, open platform that can support a multitude
of "Write Once, Run Anywhere" interactive applications, such as Intertainer's
entertainment on demand services. Culver City, CA based Intertainer has long
recognized the advantages of developing applications using Java technology.
Intertainer's "entertainment on demand" e-commerce and targeted advertising
applications are the first PersonalJava enabled services on the PowerTV(R)
platform. "PowerTV's support of Java technology has played an instrumental
role in Intertainer's development of turnkey entertainment services," said
Jonathan Taplin, Intertainer's president and co-CEO. "Combining PowerTV and
Sun's technology creates an ideal distribution platform for the exceptional
package of content that Intertainer brings to the cable industry."
