Thank you Frank, and Dave Horne. I can see I have a lot of reading to do. I was sort of envisioning that there was an easily encapsulated explanation that I could trot out for friends and family, to explain why DSL is only a stopgap substitute for coax, and fiber is the manifest destiny of the broadband future. I suppose it's not nearly so cut and dried. Thanks for pointing the way!
