Because the Bible was the engine that drove Martin Luther King Jr., its omission in school curricula constitutes an incomplete education about the man and what motivated him.

There you have the problem in a nutshell. It is one thing to oppose the promulgation of religious beliefs in the state school system. It is quite another to attenuate people and events from their very roots. Trying to understand the history of the Middle East without studying Islam is ludicrous. Trying to understand the European Middle Ages without learning the religion as it was felt and understood at the time makes the entire period opaque and alien. And the examples simply mount....

There has to be a way to educate our children fully in the religious contexts of so much of the world, fully enough so that they can feel the force and the power of these beliefs even when the beliefs are not their own. Otherwise, we continue unwittingly to lay the grounds for continuing the kinds of incomprehension that give rise to further bigotry.

I'll climb off my soap box now and put it away for a while.
