TOKYO, Jan 18 (Reuters) - Nomura Research Institute (NRI), a unit of Nomura Securities and Exodus Communications Inc (NasdaqNM:EXDS - news), a U.S. provider of data hosting services, said on Tuesday they had agreed to set up an Internet data centre in Japan. The two companies will cooperate in marketing and promotion targetting Japanese companies, NRI and Exodus Communications K.K., the Japanese unit of Exodus Communications Inc of the United States, said in a joint statement.

The new data centre will exclusively host Internet sites for operations such as Internet commerce, Internet trading, net banking and similar types of Internet business activities, they said.

Exodus Communications K.K. plans to purchase a 157,000 square foot building in Tokyo for Internet hosting services, they said.

NRI will provide customers in Japan with a Rapid Development Initiative programme in cooperation with Compaq Computer KK, the Japanese unit of Compaq Computer Corp (NYSE:CPQ - news), Sun Microsystems KK, the Japanese unit of Sun Microsystems Inc (NasdaqNM:SUNW - news) and Hewlett-Packard Japan Ltd, a unit of Hewlett-Packard Co (NYSE:HWP - news).

Under the RDI programme, customers can use servers installed in the Internet Data Center as their own servers.

Exodus said it plans to build 15 new data centres around the globe in 2000, with roughly half in the United States and half in Europe and Asia.
