Pfizer edges profit forecasts
NEW YORK -- Pfizer, the No. 2 U.S. drugmaker, says fourth-quarter profit rose 34% as it sold more of its drugs, such as the impotence pill Viagra, and helped market others such as Warner-Lambert's cholesterol reducer Lipitor. Profit from operations rose to $954 million, or 25 cents a share, from $711 million, or 18 cents in the year-earlier period. Results beat the 23-cent average estimate of analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial. Revenue rose 17% to $4.51 billion from $3.87 billion, with sales of Viagra increasing 19% to $281 million. In addition to Lipitor, Pfizer also helps market Monsanto's painkiller Celebrex.
