Japan's Largest Information Services CompanyBecomes an Echelon Authorized Network Integrator

January 18, 2000 10:04 AM
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 18, 2000--

NTT DATA to Launch Building Automation Construction Service Utilizing Echelon's LONWORKS(R) System

Echelon Corporation ELON today announced that NTT DATA Corporation has joined Echelon's Authorized Network Integrator Program.

Echelon is the worldwide leader in networking everyday devices and NTT Data is the leading provider of information systems and computer networking in Japan. NTT Data is the second largest subsidiary of NTT (Nippon Telephone and Telegraph), the world's largest provider of telecommunications services.

NTT DATA will offer design, construction, operations, and maintenance services of LONWORKS based control systems to real estate and construction companies starting in April 2000. As its first project, NTT DATA plans to use Echelon's LONWORKS system to automate its new training center, due to be completed in February 2001.

"The LONWORKS platform is the core of the next generation of control networking and NTT DATA will work to develop and expand the market for this technology," said Hidehiro Takakusa, director of NTT DATA's Facility Management Business Group. "NTT DATA was at a disadvantage because each of our buildings had its own closed, control automation system. After conducting several in-house and outside studies, NTT DATA concluded that the LONWORKS system is an ideal solution for ensuring interoperability. The LONWORKS platform allows us to provide seamless operating environments in a new breed of building automation systems." Takakusa has been instrumental in NTT DATA's adoption of LONWORKS networks and will be in charge of the company's construction of building automation systems.

"NTT DATA is a most welcome addition to our family of Authorized Network Integrators," said Lawrence Chan, vice president of Echelon Asia Pacific and Japan. "Because of its proven track record as a computer system integrator, NTT DATA is in a position to offer professional services that are unique among those currently offered by network integrators in Japan," Chan added. "This agreement marks a significant milestone in Echelon's efforts to penetrate the Japanese market, which has been largely closed up until now. With NTT DATA's support, the LONWORKS system can more easily be adopted as the de facto control standard in Japan as it has already been adopted in much of the world."

Started in 1997, Echelon's Authorized Network Integrator program trains qualified integrators in the design, installation and maintenance of flat, open, interoperable multi-vendor LONWORKS control networks. Echelon's Authorized Network Integrators offer their networking and integration expertise to commercial, industrial, municipal, governmental and institutional facility owners who want the cost, reliability and flexibility benefits offered by open, nonproprietary control systems.
