> Qualcomm Tops Bloomberg 100 List of Hot US Stocks for 1999 > > New York, Jan. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Qualcomm. If you had said that to your > broker on Jan. 1, 1999, you'd be a lot richer now. This wireless > company -- > with technology that's become the new phone carrier standard -- soared 2,619 > percent, carrying its stock price from a split-adjusted $6.48 at the > start of > the year to $176.13 at its close. It was No. 1 in Bloomberg's Top 100 > Performers, the leaders in total return-price appreciation plus reinvested > dividends, if any. Qualcomm is, in many ways, typical of 1999's superheated > market. Like Qualcomm, 91 other stocks on the Top 100 were traded on Nasdaq. > (Five were on the New York Stock Exchange, and three were on the > American Stock > Exchange.) But the Top 100 make the Nasdaq's record-setting year look > tepid. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up only 85.6 percent, after all, > while the > average stock in the Bloomberg Top 100 soared 654 percent. Qualcomm's > sector, the telecom industry, produced 27 of the 100 winners. Software, which > had many of the hot Internet issues, was second with 19; computers was third > with 13; semiconductors was fourth with 10; and biotech and electronics shared > fifth place, with five companies each. ``The key to survival in > 1999 was to > stay on the sunny side of technology and bask in the anticipated glow of the > Internet,' says John Manley, equity strategist at Salomon Smith Barney. > Big Market Caps Few among the 100 were lightweights. Only 28 had market > caps of less than $1 billion at the end of the year. Six, including Qualcomm, > which tipped the scales at $116 billion, had market caps of greater than $20 > billion. A majority of the Top 100 (62 percent) had positive > earnings over > the four previous quarters, refuting the conventional wisdom that only > money-losing dot-com companies surged last year. However, the Bloomberg > 100 did > have sky-high price-earnings ratios, averaging over 170 percent. > > Unfortunately, all of this tells us nothing about what these 100 stocks > will do > in the coming year. Given how frothy the current market is, there's > likely to be > a group rotation as well as individual crash-and-burns. Take three > of the > top 10 performers from 1995's list: Republic Industries, Chantal Pharmaceutical > Corp., and that year's number one Internet stock, PC Quote. Better yet, > be glad > if you didn't take them. Wayne Huizenga's Republic morphed into > AutoNation and > fell 78 percent since its high in January 1997. Chantal went from $27.25 to > four-tenths of a penny since the end of 1995. PC Quote, once a $21 darling, > plunged to 75 cents in 1998 before renaming itself HyperFeed > Technologies. It > ended 1999 at $4.63. > > The following is the Bloomberg 100 for 1999: > > IBES L-T Ticker Company Name 1999 Closing (millions of Growth > Return Price dollars) Estimate (%) ($) > (%) QCOM Qualcomm 2,619 176.13 116,213 35 BVSN > BroadVision 1,494 170.06 13,200 50 MCOM Metricom > 1,416 > 78.63 1,728 N/A ORTL Ortel Corp. 1,271 120.00 1,494 > 20 OMPT Omnipoint Corp. 1,195 120.63 6,506 32.5 VRSN VeriSign > 1,192 190.94 19,573 50 GBIX Globix Corp. 1,100 60.00 > 1,007 > 100 BEAS BEA Systems 1,042 69.94 11,067 45 OCLI Optical > Coating 1,039 296.00 4,191 27.5 Laboratory > IBES L-T Ticker Company Name 1999 Closing (millions of Growth > Return Price dollars) Estimate (%) ($) > (%) DCLK DoubleClick 1,037 253.06 14,095 70 EMLX Emulex > Corp. 1,025 112.50 3,981 27.5 INSP InfoSpace.com 1,023 > 214.00 10,314 50 EXDS Exodus 1,006 88.81 15,138 > 60 Communications SDLI SDL 1,000 218.00 7,710 > 40 CLRS Clarus Corp. 1,000 66.00 741 35 LWIN Leap > Wireless 983 78.50 1,447 25 International CMGI > CMGI > 940 276.88 34,048 45 AERL Aerial 936 60.88 > 5,767 > 30 Communications MRVC MRV 916 62.88 1,707 > N/A Communications HLIT Harmonic 913 94.94 2,877 > 35 CRGN CuraGen Corp. 888 69.75 1,108 N/A GNET Go2Net > 884 87.00 2,639 60 > IBES L-T Ticker Company Name 1999 Closing (millions of Growth > Return Price dollars) Estimate (%) ($) > (%) XTND Extended 834 47.88 442 N/A Systems > JDSU JDS Uniphase 830 161.31 56,046 42.5 Corp.
