Philips Forms New Chip Unit To Serve VPNs

Philips Semiconductors announced Monday a business unit to focus on chip applications for VPNs. The new organization will leverage Philips' existing products aimed at security systems to provide system-level VPN solutions for customers, including hardware as well as software, according to the semiconductor subsidiary of Royal Philips Electronics N.V.
"Our goal is to become the premier and preferred supplier of high-performance silicon security solutions for the VPN networking market," said Scott McGregor, executive vice president of the emerging businesses unit at Philips Semiconductors.
The new organization will report to Dave Auer, who is group product line manager for Philips' networking business line group.
The new unit rolled out on Monday one of its first VPN products, the VMS747 security processor, which is aimed at VPNs and other high-speed secure applications, said Philips. The processor uses data security algorithms and technology from RSA Security of Bedford, Mass., to protect information on networks and in systems. The security processor was introduced Monday at the RSA Security show in San Jose, Calif.
According to Philips, the VMS747 is a cost-effective, high-performance single-chip solution for high-speed and highly secure applications. It is designed as a self-contained security processor integrating high-speed bulk data encryption, hashing, public key acceleration, random number generation, and battery-backed memory as part of its basic architecture |
