Digital Courier Licenses its MPEG Technology to Australia's Sky Radio

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 23, 1997--Digital Courier Inte (Alberta Stock Exchange DIC.) Digital Courier International Corporation (Alberta Stock Exchange - DIC) announced today that it has licensed its Capella Live MPEG Codecs to Sky Radio for integration into Sky Radio's satellite network. The license will enable Sky Radio to distribute CD quality audio and data throughout Australia. The deal marks the first time DCI's technology will be implemented over a satellite network.

Sky Radio's satellite link will use Capella Live at both the transmitting and receiving ends. At the central transmitting end, the codec compresses the audio, while at the receiving ends (located at radio stations) it decompresses the audio and can either store it to hard disk for later playback or route the audio for immediate live re-transmission.

Allan Kozak, DCI's President commented "We've known for some time that we had developed an internationally applicable technology, but it's particularly gratifying to sign Sky Radio this early in our growth. Product sales and licenses are projected to make-up a significant portion of our revenues as DCI moves forward".

"We chose the Capella Live codec primarily because it is PC-based. It enables us to operate a multi-point distribution service of audio and data to radio stations throughout Australia and New Zealand with a user-friendly PC interface. It also enables us to enhance the solution by writing new software as our needs evolve," states Brendan Sheedy, General Manager of Sky Radio Network. "We chose DCI as a supplier because of their network experience throughout the North American radio marketplace."

Sky Radio is Australia's largest affiliated commercial satellite radio network, supplying over 140 radio stations across Australia with an extensive range of programs and services including live long-form music programs, new services, live sporting descriptions, live concerts and production libraries. In Australia and New Zealand, Sky Radio distributes programs from the American ABC and CBS networks, Radio Today and Premiere Radio, Sky Radio has a live, 24-hour satellite link, carrying high-quality audio services from Los Angeles to Sydney.

Digital Courier International assists companies in developing custom solutions for audio management and provides design and integration services through internal resources and external partners. DCI also licenses its MPEG compression and decompression algorithms to equipment manufacturers who are developing new MPEG products, but who wish to avoid the associated effort, risk and time limitations. Since its inception in 1994, DCI has deployed and managed the only two-way digital audio distribution network in the world, allowing members to send and receive CD-quality advertisements, traffic instructions, short-form programming and music releases across North America in less than one hour.
