Flu epidemic 'came from outer space' The flu epidemic which has struck down hundreds of thousands of people came from outer space, according to British scientists. Researchers at the University of Wales, Cardiff, blame the epidemic on high-energy sunspots which brought cosmic dust into the Earth's atmosphere. They say those who fell ill with the flu had come into contact with the dust. The scientists, led by Professor Chandra Wickramasinghe, believe the dust from comets which passed near the Earth contained either the virus itself or DNA molecules which became the flu bug. They also claim sunspots were responsible for the 1918 outbreak of Spanish flu blamed for 20 million deaths worldwide. The report, The Dilemma of Influenza, is to be published in the journal Current Science. It warns: "Sooner or later a really bad situation like the one in 1918 will arise so long as the Government's advisers continue to prefer medical dogma to taking a closer look at the facts."
