I don't know how much credence to attach to Joel's guesses, or to
the accuracy of "whispers". I don't think the worst is factored into
the price but I suspect the company can come out with a reasonable
earnings total.

The NBR quote I think came from a Vice president, who admitted that
there have been periods of no- or slower growth, meaning
likely in orders, that are masked by the large backlog they had. Add to that the decrease in backlog from the earlier quarter, ie the comment that earnings this Q were harder to predict, etc. and certainly you will get concerned "whispers". A blockbuster short? I doubt it.

Warnings did not help 3com stock price, did it? Also, I think the
Cisco acquisition program would have been seriously affected, so
why issue cautions when the general caution is already out there.
