NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Chip maker Rambus Inc. posted higher fiscal first-quarter earnings but saw its revenue drop from the previous quarter.

Rambus (RMBS) said net income for the quarter ended Dec. 31 came to $2.5 million, or 10 cents a diluted share, compared with the year-earlier's $2.1 million, or eight cents a diluted share. The mean estimate of analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial was for earnings of 10 cents a share.

Revenue increased 11% from the year-ago period to $11.9 million but dropped 3% from the fiscal fourth-quarter.

The company reported royalties of $2.6 million, an increase from the previous quarter's $1.7 million reported in the previous quarter. It believed the increase was primarily due to seasonal shipments of Rambus ICs used in the Nintendo 64 video game system.

Contract revenue for the quarter decreased from $10.6 million to $9.3 million mainly due to the ending of revenue recognition on the Texas Instruments DRAM contract.

During the quarter, two Intel chipsets were released which allow the use of Rambus technology in desktop PCs and workstations.

The company expects in the next two quarters to see the first royalties from the shipment of Rambus ICs for use in those systems as well as the Sony PlayStation 2 video game system. Rambus anticipates a significant increase in short-term contract revenue due to it cancelling the contracts of certain licensees which are reducing their activities in the DRAM market.
