NAS configurations can coexist, indeed, be a part of SANs. There are EMC SANs out there with NTAP servers as part of the storage farm. EMC's Symmetrix system is their premier offering and is much more scalable than NTAP NAS is today. However, NTAP's scalability is doubling every year or less and will match EMC very soon, with clustered, soft failover systems giving 100% uptime with no redundancy required. (NTAP's architecture provides for active filers to back one another up, so no redundant "on reserve" components are required.) The market views NTAP filers as more reliable and about 1/2 half the cost per GB as EMC. Filers are also much simpler to install and support. EMC requires EMC engineers to install Symmetrix and engineers must assist customers with any reconfigurations after installation. Lots of proprietary, cryptic tools required for EMC. NTAP looks and feels like Unix and NT to its administrators. No proprietary techniques required. No NTAP engineers required even for initial installation of a customer's first filer. It is clear to me that EMC is in a hurry to get NAS technology to fight NTAP's encorachment into its heretofore exclusive marketplace. NTAP is not "on the low end of the storage market". <50GB to 1.4TB is their current range.
