Yes, Jane, the door opened to some fresh air today...

And that followed the darkest hours of this thread over the long weekend. The lowest point of all was the series of posts that amounted to a veiled threat of lawsuits against people "we don't like." The implied message was, "Warning! You may get your ass sued off if we don't like what you say here. And even if there's no merit to the suits, we have the money to clean you out defending yourself. So be warned - we're taking names!"

Maybe some of you think I went overboard in my characterization of this thread as evolving into a cult ... but I think my point was made for me this weekend.

Maybe freedom of expression will be alive and well again here. I give Tim credit for attracting many good people to this thread, but I think a lot of them retreated into their shells as the atmosphere degenerated into one of vengeance, threats, and suppression of dissent.

The great thing about SI is that it's an open forum for all to say what they think. A lot of wisdom comes out of that. Ideally, it will be with humor and taste, but even if done with a few insults here and there, the important thing is that it be without fear.

Regards,

J.C.
