AMD Zone editor loses Dell job
The joint founder of AMD Zone, Chris Tom, has been forced to find a new job because his former employer, Dell, considered his interest in the Athlon was a conflict of interest.
Chris Tom, who, together with his brother, built the hardware site into one of the most regularly visited AMD spots on the Web, was called into Dell's HQ in Austin at the beginning of last month to explain his actions, The Register is given to understand.
Although Chris Tom has consistently refused to comment on the exact circumstances of the meetings with Dell, we understand that he was informed that the Athlon AMD Zone and its companion Slot A site conflicted with Dell's interests.
Dell is a major supplier of Intel processors in its PCs, and is probably the last of the major PC vendors that does not supply Athlon (AMD) CPUs in its machines.
Yesterday, AMD Zone reported that HP will use Athlons in its Pavilion range of PCs.
Further, we are given to understand, Chris Tom was blamed for leaking information about a bug in the Coppermine processor, an allegation which Mr. Tom has strenuously denied.
Negotiations between Dell and Tom failed to come up with any kind of a compromise, and a posting on his site today shows that he has found another job instead.
Both Dell and Chris Tom were unavailable for comment at press time. "------ |
