BEIJING (January 19, 2000 6:16 a.m. EST nandotimes.com) - The number of Internet users in China more than doubled in the last six months of 1999 from 4 million to 8.9 million, the official newspaper China Daily reported Wednesday. Most of those users are young single men.

The proportion of women going online jumped by 6 percent from June to the end of 1999, but women still account for just 21 percent of users. Most Chinese Web surfers - 64 percent - are unmarried and 75 percent are aged 18 to 30, the China Daily reported.

Despite often slow connection speeds and high charges, Chinese users spend an average of 17 hours on the Internet each week, it said.

The number of Web sites in China rose from 9,906 at the end of June to 15,153 by the end of the year, the newspaper said, following Tuesday's release of a twice-yearly government-backed report on Internet growth.

China's rapid Internet growth has come despite government controls that limit access to foreign sites officials consider politically sensitive. Police have set up special units to monitor Internet content and traffic.

The government is attracted by the economic and technological benefits of the Internet but worries that the access to information and easy communication it offers could undermine Communist Party authority.
