Research In Motion signs agreement with Intel Research In Motion Ltd RIM Shares issued 67,468,467 Jan 18 close $80.50 Wed 19 Jan 2000 News Release Mr. David Werezak reports Research In Motion has signed an agreement with Intel Corp. to supply the BlackBerry wireless E-mail solution to employees in multiple offices across North America. As part of the initial phase of the agreement, Intel plans to deploy multiple BlackBerry Enterprise Servers and over 2,000 BlackBerry Handhelds within the next three months. The BlackBerry solution provides Intel employees with secure, mobile access to their corporate E-mail, contacts, calendar and task list. With BlackBerry, Intel is able to deploy a wireless E-mail solution using industry-leading security standards. BlackBerry incorporates an advanced security model using Triple DES encryption technology. With this security design, all E-mail is encrypted behind the company's firewall before it is sent to the wireless hand-held. "The RIM device is an example of the ease of use, portability, security and battery life benefits that are enabled by products from the Handheld Computing Division," said Ron Smith, vice-president and general manager of Intel's Wireless Computing and Communications Group. "I have personally used BlackBerry for several months and have found it very useful." "The BlackBerry Handheld and Enterprise Server were tested extensively within Intel (multisite and multiuser profiles) to ensure they met our deployment requirements," said Doug Weiner, IT wireless and mobile product manager, Intel Corp. "The capability to securely, wirelessly monitor one's inbox while selecting, or filtering which mail is pushed to it, is a powerful communications tool." The BlackBerry Handheld is based on embedded Intel architecture and incorporates a low power 32-bit Intel386 processor, 2-MB Intel Flash memory, integrated wireless modem, full keyboard, Triple DES encryption technology and E-mail/organizer software. It is designed to be wearable, operate 24 hours per day and run on a single AA alkaline battery for several weeks. "BlackBerry's ability to extend enterprise E-mail and organizer information to the mobile professional enables people to manage their E-mail from a secure and wearable device," said David Werezak, vice-president, marketing at Research In Motion. "Intel employees can improve personal productivity, customer responsiveness and enhance workgroup collaboration with confidence that the unique BlackBerry security model protects their communications." RIM's BlackBerry solution includes a powerful wireless hand-held with integrated E-mail/organizer software, PC docking cradle, innovative desktop and server software, single mailbox integration with Microsoft Exchange and flat-rate nationwide airtime. It features an end-to-end security system whereby all corporate E-mail remains encrypted at all points between the desktop PC and the BlackBerry Handheld, meeting standard corporate security guidelines. The "push model" of E-mail delivery that BlackBerry provides does not require the user to dial-in or initiate the connection, so users receive notification as a new E-mail arrives and can respond immediately. BlackBerry Enterprise Server allows centralized administration, increased scalability, enhanced performance, as well as improved support for laptops.
