Metalink Plays Key Role in Setting HDSL2 Standards
Metalink Demonstrates Dedication to HDSL2 Development

TEL AVIV, Israel--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 2000--Metalink Ltd. (Nasdaq:MTLK - news), a fabless semiconductor company and leading manufacturer of high performance, symmetric digital subscriber line (DSL) chip sets, announces its continued role and commitment to setting of High bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line 2 (HDSL2) standards and testing procedures.

HDSL2 will deliver full-duplex (symmetric) services over one copper loop, while continuing to enable the same fast access and cost efficiency as HDSL.

Metalink is an active member of the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Lab's (IOL) HDSL2 Consortium, which is a group of recognized leaders in advanced telecommunications technologies working together to further advance HDSL2 interoperability between multiple vendors' equipment and educate students in HDSL2 technology. Metalink has participated in the consortium since it began in June 1999.

``We are pleased to have Metalink and other leaders in telecommunications technologies working together in the HDSL2 Consortium. Their commitment to developing interoperable DSLAM and customer premises equipment (CPE) in a cooperative manner in the HDSL2 Consortium will assist service providers and users to deliver high-speed data and Internet services.' said Scott Valcourt, HDSL2 Consortium Manager.``

Affirming its commitment and leadership position to HDSL2 interoperability, Metalink is a member of the steering committee for the HDSL2 Consortium and is assisting in the development of the first HDSL2 Consortium plugfest, where interoperability tests will be performed to ensure standard compliance. Metalink has been a leader in setting single pair HDSL2 standards as it has with its preceding standards. Metalink's recommendation for single pair HDSL set the performance standard in Europe. In addition, the ITU selected Metalink's SDSL performance as the industry's standard. In North America, Metalink pioneered the single pair T1, helping to initiate the HDSL2 standardization process in ANSI four years ago.

``HDSL2 addresses the exploding need for symmetric access to the network, driven by business users,' explains Metalink chairman and CEO, Tzvi Shukhman. ``HDSL2 is the technology which enables high end applications such as fast Internet access, telecommuting, business to business e-commerce and more.'

Other members of the HDSL2 Consortium include: ADC Telecommunications, ADTRAN, Inc. Cabletron Systems, Conexant Systems, Globespan, Level One Communications, PairGain Technologies, Sonoma Systems and Teltrend, Inc.
