Actually, they don't print money at all. They sell bonds which people are only glad to buy, making the US the debtor nation of the world. Presumably being the biggest and most powerful makes them the most creditworthy. With the budget being almost in balance, they have less need to borrow (i.e. sell bonds) than before. They might resume borrowing at full tilt when the economy eases however.
