Way OT: Solitons,

Bernard
I just came back from a conference/vacation in Fl to the frigid Northeast. But it warmed me to see that the topic of solitons is once again being reviewed and that you have returned to the discussion. From an abstract (and in my cause only partially informed) point of view, sotiton-esque pulses offer the intuitive appeal that IP-based information could be transmitted in light bundles or pulses with certain robust and self-healing properties. The technical discussion below covered this; but it should be emphasized. My questions to you are: is it possible for one or more of these soliton pulses to pass through each other without interference causing a deterioration if the contained information; and can the pulse be polarized and still be a soliton.

OT: I have heard of 2 interesting soliton related issues. Apparently, the high speed cats that ferry passengers from England to France were causing a wake that did not dissipate as expected and was capsizing boats several miles away. I don't know if this is fact, but it seems consistent with the history of the Soliton's discovery. Second, I was surprised to see that soliton representations of D-branes plays a growing role in the M-theory variation of the superstring stuff. Curious little beasties these are.

Regards
Steve
