I don't have the reference handy, but a King cannot morph into a gorilla through better execution or lower cost. Those can always be duplicated or threatened. They can become a stronger King, or they can change the rules by introducing something proprietary (and getting it accepted by the market place). The other way is to change areas of focus the way Intel, King of memory, morphed into Intel, Gorilla of microprocessors. That said, a mighty King can outperform many gorillas for quite a while (long JDSU).
