I just pulled up a chart of the Nikkei ... guess it depends on what you mean by "fast". I see a pattern reminiscent of '73-'74 on the Dow, except the "recovery phase" (bottom) seems longer and deeper on the Nik.
It took six months to do REAL damage to the Nikkei. There were some dizzyingly bearish weeks in there fer shurr, but 1987 it wasn't.

But societally, yeah. Japan has always impressed with its reputation for discipline within the group. Americans haven't shown that since Roosevelt or arguably Eisenhower. Well, our big chance may be on the horizon.

But I kind of hope not.
