Two ways to get some insights:

1. Get a subscription to IBD. They publish an accumulation/distribution rating on every stock every day. Stocks with an "A" rating are under accumulation by institutional investors.

2. Most charting services and some Internet charting sites provide graphs of "On Balance Volume" and/or "Money Flow". Read up on them. They give indications on what the big players are doing.

Also the percent of shares held by institutions is available in many places (such as the Market Guide site) - although it is never really up-to-date.
