Tony -< Transmeta >

Looking more closely at Transmeta, they have an excellent emulation technology. It is a dedicated piece of hardware optimized for emulation. As you put it , "Emulation is never as good as the real McCoy". So in the x86 space Crusoe will probably not live up to the hype.

What else can it emulate ? Why emulate any machine ? What is emulation good for ? Ah ha why not emulate a `Jave machine' ? Java is an interpreted language, and thus runs slow. Emulation and Interpretation are very similar in the sense that you do an on line translation of the instruction stream , and execute the "native machine code".

So my guess is that the Transmeta could make an excellent Java machine, far better than any that will be available for a while. So why arnt they doing it? The larger potential market for the x86 ! IMHO , given the entry barriers of the x86, Transmeta seem to be aiming their technology at the wrong market. A focus on Java enabled appliances would serve them better. The x86 market is too big to ignore, but can become a vicious quicksand, and quickly drain a startup.
