[GTE ...CLEC Upside]

<<Keep the brain working. It beats turning grey watching the stock sink further. BTW,
tell me how GTE would benefit by becoming a CLEC versus their current LEC
status. This is what they're working on and I admit I don't fully understand the
benefits/restrictions of one over the other.>>

GTE is selling local and long distance service in about 12-14 states.
(I could be off by one or two here). Imagine if they were to partner
with an ISP or UUNET across the country to offer internet services. Now
imagine if they also offered voice services over the internet. GTE
would then have a service platform (1.5-6mb) to every home in
America. Hmmm...do you think Microsoft might like to be a content
partner in this relationship?

When GTE competes on Ameritech turf..they would be a CLEC .. a
competitive Local Exchange Carrier. In this relationship they would
abide by the same rules that govern ISP's...although I personally
think the RBOC's would go crazy.

FYI..I think Bell South is doing the same with thier IBM alliance. The
IBM Data Network extends beyond the Bell South service area.

Bottom line, it's a way for the carrier to offer services outside of
their normal service area.
