Softbank Commerce, VerticalNet to set up JV in Feb

TOKYO, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Softbank Commerce Corp, a subsidiary of giant Japanese
Internet Investor Softbank Corp , said on Monday it and VerticalNet Inc
(NasdaqNM:VERT - news) of the United States will set up a joint venture in February.

The new company, ``VerticalNet Japan Corp,' will be capitalised at 400 million yen and provide business-to-business
electronic commerce services.

Softbank Commerce will own 60 percent of the venture, while the remaining 40 percent will be taken by VerticalNet, which
promotes Internet communities in specialised business areas in the United States.

Companies that give access to Internet services will receive specialised real-time information of communities and marketplaces
in each industry, Softbank Commerce said.

Japan's business-to-business electronic commerce market has been in the spotlight amid expectations its size will grow to 19
trillion yen in 2000 and 68 trillion yen by 2003, Softbank Commerce said, citing a report issued last year by Japan's Ministry of
International Trade and Industry.
