Created to feed from the Net's venture capital trough, these companies nonetheless are supposed to advance the public-interest mission of their parents by exploiting their well-known names. And so the American Medical Association and six other nonprofit medical societies created Medem last October to compete against a host of Internet startups for the loyalty of the nation's physicians. When Medem.com launches next month, it will offer Web sites for doctors so they can communicate with patients.
