QUALCOMM CDMA TECHNOLOGIES' MSM3000 CHIPSET AND SYSTEM SOFTWARE POWERS NEW DATA-ENABLED HANDSETS IN JAPAN - INDUSTRY LEADER SUPPORTS JAPAN'S 64 kbps High-Speed Wireless Internet Access Service -
PR NEWSWIRE - January 20, 2000 07:30
SAN DIEGO, Jan 20, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that its MSM3000(TM) chipset and high-speed packet data (HSPD) software solution is featured in the handsets developed by Toshiba, Hitachi, Casio, Sanyo and Sony for the 64 kilobits per second (kbps) high-speed packet data service jointly launched on Japan's nationwide cdmaOne(TM) network by DDI CORPORATION and IDO CORPORATION on January 7, 2000.

Five Japanese companies became the first manufacturers to utilize QUALCOMM's MSM3000 chipset and system software solution to develop 64 kbps HSPD-capable handsets and receive confirmation that their handsets were fully compliant with the DDI and IDO requirements.

"We are very proud to be the first company to have shipped a 64 kbps high-speed packet data handset that is fully compliant with the DDI and IDO requirements," said Takao Kishida, general manager of the Mobile Communications Division at TOSHIBA. "Our collaboration with QUALCOMM made this milestone possible."

"Following our successful 1999 spring model, and thanks to QUALCOMM's proven hardware and software technology, we have full confidence in being able to satisfy the users of our new handset," said Osamu Numata, general manager of Digital Media Products Division at Hitachi. "The shift to 64 kbps HSPD from low-speed circuit-switched data will stimulate interest in wireless Internet access through cellular networks."

"With QUALCOMM's on-time delivery of its HSPD solution and intensive technical support, we are delighted to introduce our first cdmaOne handset with HSPD capability," said Yasuichi Kaku, operating officer, general manager of Telecommunication and Communication Division at Casio. "We believe our innovative concept of the cdmaOne handset, C303CA, will be a sensation in the marketplace."

"We are extremely satisfied with QUALCOMM's data-voice solution, which allows us to provide our customers with the superior performance they require," said Eiji Kotobuki, officer of SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. (and vice president, Multimedia Company, and general manager, Personal Telecommunications Division). "I look forward to both companies working together on future leading-edge handsets."

"We are confident that our handset satisfies the high requirements of the market," said Hiroya Usui, general manager of Product Department, Digital Telecommunication Company at Sony. "Our confidence in QUALCOMM's innovative technologies, such as 64 kbps HSPD, allowed us to concentrate our efforts on areas such as reducing the handset's weight and creating new display functions."

"We are pleased that the leaders in wireless communications in Japan selected QUALCOMM's MSM3000 chipset and system software solution for their new generation of 64 kbps HSPD handsets," said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "Our goal is to continue to offer complete solutions that allow manufacturers to shorten their time to market with state-of-the-art products."

Selected for its superior performance and industry-leading features, the MSM3000 chipset and system software represents the first solution available in production quantities to support IS-95B mobile protocol revision four, featuring data rates of up to 86.4 kbps, providing wireless handset manufacturers and network operators the ability to deliver high-speed wireless Internet access anywhere.

Release 3.0 of the MSM3000 system software -- which includes support for HSPD -- shipped on time in May 1999. Version 4.0 of the software shipped in December 1999. Version 4.0 includes features such as voice enhancements, improved handoff, call setup, roaming indication, incoming call forwarding, neighbor searching and pilot reporting.

The solution includes a full interoperability specification for infrastructure requirements and provides complete training and technical support to ensure manufacturers can quickly add high-speed packet data to their existing MSM3000-based handsets without requiring any new or additional hardware.

In addition to the MSM3000 system software, QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies began sample shipments of its next generation MSM3100(TM) CDMA chipset and system software in September 1999. The MSM3100 solution supports data rates of up to 86.4 kbps and features a 50 percent reduction in the printed circuit board area and a 50 percent increase in stand-by time (to an estimated 300 hours in CDMA mode with a 650 mAh battery).

QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies is continuing to lead the wireless industry in providing semiconductor and software system solutions that provide handset manufacturers with the ability to innovate and differentiate their CDMA handsets while reducing development costs.
