SAN DIEGO, Jan 20, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that its MSM3000(TM) chipset and high-speed packet data (HSPD) software solution is featured in the handsets developed by Toshiba, Hitachi, Casio, Sanyo and Sony for the 64 kilobits per second (kbps) high-speed packet data service jointly launched on Japan's nationwide cdmaOne(TM) network by DDI CORPORATION and IDO CORPORATION on January 7, 2000.
Five Japanese companies became the first manufacturers to utilize QUALCOMM's MSM3000 chipset and system software solution to develop 64 kbps HSPD-capable handsets and receive confirmation that their handsets were fully compliant with the DDI and IDO requirements.

Selected for its superior performance and industry-leading features, the MSM3000 chipset and system software represents the first solution available in production quantities to support IS-95B mobile protocol revision four, featuring data rates of up to 86.4 kbps, providing wireless handset manufacturers and network operators the ability to deliver high-speed wireless Internet access anywhere.
Release 3.0 of the MSM3000 system software -- which includes support for HSPD -- shipped on time in May 1999. Version 4.0 of the software shipped in December 1999. Version 4.0 includes features such as voice enhancements, improved handoff, call setup, roaming indication, incoming call forwarding, neighbor searching and pilot reporting.
The solution includes a full interoperability specification for infrastructure requirements and provides complete training and technical support to ensure manufacturers can quickly add high-speed packet data to their existing MSM3000-based handsets without requiring any new or additional hardware.
In addition to the MSM3000 system software, QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies began sample shipments of its next generation MSM3100(TM) CDMA chipset and system software in September 1999. The MSM3100 solution supports data rates of up to 86.4 kbps and features a 50 percent reduction in the printed circuit board area and a 50 percent increase in stand-by time (to an estimated 300 hours in CDMA mode with a 650 mAh battery).
