I remember reading somewhere that analysts rarely rate a stock a 4 (Moderate Sell) or a 5 (Strong Sell), because it will only result in severance of their contacts with the company. So, they generally go as low as 3 (Hold), and seldom go beyond that, unless of course, the company is definitely going down the drain!

And talking about contrary indicators, I try to interpret "Hold" as "Buy" (or to be more precise, as "Consider Buying"). On the other hand, a "Buy"/"Strong Buy" recommendation generally means "Take Profit"/"Sell"!

In fact, Michael Gianturco, says in "The Market That Beats The Market" that he is almost tempted to start a mutual fund called the "Buy-on-Hold Fund" :-)
