I doubt that Visx has achieved brand recognition among the patients, let alone loyalty. The doctors do have an incentive to use VISX because that is what most of them are familiar with and trained for. This is a technology driven market niche and the company with the best technology wins. Of course, if others can replicate or improve upon Visx's machines without fear of patent litigations, then that spells bad news for VISX. Here is a more comprehensive article discussing VISX.
