Stock margin requirement not effective-Fed's Meyer

WASHINGTON, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Board Governor Laurence Meyer said
on Thursday the U.S. central bank did not think raising stock market margin requirements
were an effective policy tool.

''Margin requirements are simply not an effective means of dealing with the situation,'' he said
in answer to a question after giving a speech to the National Economists Club and Society of
Government Economists in Washington.

''I don't want to go to the point of saying that there is an imbalance to be corrected. There are a variety of exceptional
developments going on which in part help explain where the market is today,'' he added.
