As I understand the figures the "surplus" is an accounting fiction, as are most of the government figures. If a company operated with the kind of accounting the Feds use it would get sued for fraud (imo)- but maybe not- some of the nutz are pretty fraudulent, they could ALMOST be mistaken for the Feds but not quite.

The whole thing is pretty much like a pyramid scheme- but alas one we are forced to pay into. I am for helping out the needy but I'm do not like Social Security- but on the other hand, it is a little too late to revamp, and maybe alternates would have been just as bad or worse- I really can't be sure. It would probably take a bankruptcy of the system to get people (and politicians) motivated enough to really change it.
