The 6980 and 6985 both feature AMD(R) SC-400 processors. Both units have 8MB of RAM, up to 4MB of available storage via a CompactFlash(TM) storage card and support an unlimited number of mobile computers.
New Devices Simplify Mobile Computer Network Configuration and Operation

Updated 2:45 PM ET January 17, 2000

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Two new networking managers from Intermec Technologies Corp. promise to simplify networking and reduce operating costs for companies who use mobile computers. The Intermec 6980 and 6985 allow IT system administrators to remotely configure, implement and manage hand-held remote computers using standard web-based tools (browsers, HTTP and FTP clients).
The Microsoft(R) Windows(R) CE-based Intermec 6980 and 6985 offer increased data transmission speed and improved file transfer, system application version control and broadcast file distribution -- all features engineered to optimize information flow. Faster and more complete information reduces bottlenecks, speeds order fulfillment and improves customer service, enhancing supply chain management throughout a company's information system.

Remote management and configuration eliminates the need to send out specially trained technicians for periodic upgrades or rely on personnel at depot locations for file updates. System administrators simply dial into the company's existing IP local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN) to transmit data to and from mobile computers. Administrators can automatically load initial programs, application software versions and mobile computer flash software anywhere.

"Intermec continues to lead the way in developing solutions that are improving the way we all conduct business," said Becky Kaske, director of Manufacturing Industries for Microsoft Corp. "The Intermec Network Managers utilize the Windows CE operating system to give customers the ability to access and manage their data for true enterprise mobile computing. Windows CE-based mobile computers and network managers provide the level of application and communication functionality necessary to support data management throughout the supply chain."

"Windows CE is a full featured, embedded operating system that provides a wide range of functionality while allowing us to conserve valuable system resources," said Kelly Ungs, group product manager for Intermec Systems and Solutions. "By using Windows CE, we can leverage existing Windows 32 system software we have already developed, such as our HTTP and FTP servers, which are critical to remotely configure and control the network-based communication and management device."

The 6980 and 6985 Network Managers allow for easy migration from Intermec's Norand(R) 4980 and 4985 Controllers without changes to mobile computer applications, protecting customer investment in current infrastructures. Both network devices are also backward compatible with existing applications.

The 6980 and 6985 both feature AMD(R) SC-400 processors. Both units have 8MB of RAM, up to 4MB of available storage via a CompactFlash(TM) storage card and support an unlimited number of mobile computers. A rugged design and no moving parts ensure reliable operation even in remote, unattended environments.

The 6980 has two RS-232 external modem ports, two external RS-485 ports and Ethernet connectivity via 10BaseT. The 6980 allows for up to two Type III PC cards and also features a IrDA(R) serial diagnostic/configuration interface port. The 6985 supports one RS-232 host port and one RS-485 network connector for multi-docks. Like the 6980, the 6985 supports IrDA for diagnostics/configuration.

The 6980 and 6985 are the first new products in the Intermec i-Connect suite. The i-Connect system facilities communication and simplifies and reduces the cost of remote network and mobile device management.

"As the first products of our i-Connect suite, the 6980 and 6985 Network Managers provide IP connectivity giving our customers a marketplace advantage," said Tom Miller, senior vice president of Intermec Systems and Solutions. "They allow data exchange and management anywhere in the world using existing LAN and WAN connections. Since the 6980 and 6985 Network Managers use the latest methods and technology, cost conscious customers can expand networking capabilities, improve data throughput and reduce daily communication costs."
