Their headline said something to the effect that "29 AIM Mutual Funds Outperformed the S&P 500 in 1999." The ad showed the performance of all of them. What the ad didn't tell us (that I pointed out to my boss) is that about 28 of the 29 funds underperformed the S&P 500 in the past five years.

On CNBC, Ken Heebner's REIT commercial, the one with two guys fencing, has one of them tell the other: "Still dissatisfied with your portfolio's performance? My Reit has increased 75 percent over the last 5 years!" If my portfolio had increased only 75% during the greatest known bull market in the history of this galaxy I certainly wouldn't want anyone to know about it.
