Re: Chapman at Cyrix

Chapman is one of the con artists that talked Landmark into rewriting their baby benchmark to fit into the 1K L1 cache of the Cyrix 486 clone that actually ran with 386 performance. The Intel 486 had an 8K L1 cache that gave a real-world performance boost. Voila, Cyrix had a benchmark number to show 486 performance.

The real world performance of the Cyrix 486 was miserable and quickly earned Cyrix a well-deserved bad reputation.

Cyrix, RIP.

Enter Transmeta with Chapman pitching the Crusoe processor with its great performance.

transmeta.com

"... most existing industry benchmarks still focus on measuring peak performance only, which is too simplistic a measure for mobile applications. Therefore, Transmeta has developed a new benchmarking methodology for measuring and evaluating mobile computer devices."

Translation: our X86 performance really, really sucks but we have defined a new set of metrics where we can do OK. Who knows if the metrics mean anything in the real world, we have something to brag about.

Maybe we can sell some of this crap to run a Linux powered DVD player.
