Thrunet Buys Domain Korea.Com for $5 Us mln

Friday, January 21 9:37 AM SGT

SEOUL, Jan 21 Asia Pulse - Thrunet, which provides high-speed internet services through a cable TV network, bought the Web domain "korea.com" for US$5 million, the second-highest price in the world after "business.com" was purchased for $US7.5 million last November.

Thrunet Chairman Lee Yong-tae said Friday that the company had signed a contract with Tiac C and C, which provides news on Korea, entertainment and e-business in the Web site.

Former domain owner Lee Hee-joon, a Korean-American, bought "korea.com" for $US70 in 1995.

"I think the domain name is worth $US500 million because it represents the country," Thrunet CEO Lee said.

Thrunet, the first Korean company to get listed on the NASDAQ last November, registered on the market with the name "Korea" instead of its company name "Thrunet".
