8x8 is not new to the telecommunication industry when they developed the H.324 based video phone priced at $249-599 (depending on the configuration, using a dedicated monitor or using a TV for display etc.) It was the only vendor on the market with a complete videophone product about two years ago.

I worked with an 8x8 marketing manager and engineers trying to use their chip set to develop an OEM version of the video phone. However, they asked for a quarter million dollars for the reference design alone, so the deal did not go through. Also because of the very limited bandwidth available with the regular PSTN line, thus poor video quality, 8x8 videophone, along with other attempt by other vendors, eventually died of no market.

However, their investment in that product is paying off now, and it may pay off big when cheaper bandwidth is available to the "last mile" of Internet.
