dmf, re:"Is Intel allowing a choice of platform for those choosing to outsource to Intel, but for a limited time, with a requirement to migrate to Intel based solutions?'
there is no mandatory migration
re:"My question wasn't whether or not there were "some Sun hardware in the Intel datacenters" but "What percentage of customers use Intel and Sun platforms in Intel's server farm at Santa Clara?"
I don't know the answer, and we would not disclose the answer publicly - that detail isn't really considered relevant for corporate reporting.
re:"I understand some customers might use all Intel hardware, some Intel and Sun (or other hardware) and, possibly, some ALL Sun or other hardware. I was trying to determine what exists now. I understand that Intel may not want this information to be public, for whatever reason."
you're right about the public information. I'm curious as to what use these statistics would be to you. Surely. the specific numbers aren't as important as the general trend. You would want to know the degree of heterogeneous environments...does it represent the market as a whole?...how well is Intel doing in attracting customers who have Sun in their datacenter now....that sort of thing, yes?
re:"Is it out of line to ask if your post comes from an individual who happens to work at Intel or an individual who works at Intel AND has some responsibility to respond to posts on this thread?"
the former. I've been on SI since May'96 when I was the Intel IR manager - I posted more frequently then. It was never an official job responsibility, but given my job then was to be a conduit to Intel's investors, it seemed natural to scan this thread. You can thank Jules Garfunkle for introducing me to SI (met him in NYC). Back then there was Burt, and Paul and Carl and a crop of anti-Intel posters. Seen many crops come and go since. Intel stock higher every year. You can read my profile for my current role. Nobody gets paid by Intel to post or monitor SI.
re:"Can you tell me what most customers of Intel Online Services are running in the Santa Clara datacenter?"
Sorry, again no statistics are available for outside consumption.
