I think you're looking on the wrong coast. What is missed is the obvious: Every winning Republican ticket since 1928, save one exception*, has had a Californian on the ticket. Bush is tied or leads Gore there now, something few predicted.

* The 1988 election is the exception, but is distinguished away as RR's third term. Let's face it, VP's haven't succeeded directly to the head office in generations before (Van Buren) the successful Reagan-Bush torch pass. But once Bush the Elder abandoned principles and ran on his own steam, he got clobbered. "W" is benefiting from the fact that many regret that error in light of the subsequent two-term scandalabra known as the Clinton administration.
